The reimagination of wasted space.

When my husband and I bought our house, we didn't really think about how we were going to use the space in our entry way. It was clear that the previous owners used it as the husband's office/music space, probably because they had an unexpected second child and he was kicked out of his space. (There are only 3 small bedrooms in our house.)

The space, as used by the previous owners, looked like this:

Over the years, we've tossed around a lot of ideas about how to use the space. It has housed a spare couch. (We got rid of that pretty quickly -- no one ever sat in it!) Then we thought that maybe we could create a closet and powder room, and eventually get rid of the existing downstairs powder room to open up the kitchen. Although that would have been an excellent use of the space, we quickly realized that the cost of doing that would have resulted in our spending more than what we could get for the house when we eventually sell it. We've always known that this will not be our forever home, so that was out of the question.

For a while, it had bookshelves and a chair and some unused artwork and decor items. It wasn't the best solution, but it was better than nothing.

Once Brennon was born, it quickly started filling up with baby stuff and junk we had to get out of other rooms. Sadly, this is what it looked like at that point:

You can somewhat see what was going on with the bookshelf, chair, decor... right? But then we added the pack n play. And the bumbo. And a random box of diapers. And oh, there's the vacuum cleaner. And a soft bin of toys. And a play mat. (And so on...)

I realized that a lot of Brennon's toys were ending up in this room. As I began to look around my house to prepare to childproof it, it dawned on me -- this wasted space could be his play room!

I spent a few days thinking about how it would all work out. We'd have to move the bookshelf. The decor would have to find a new home. I'd have to create a space where he'd be happy and comfortable and safe. But it could work, right?

I began the work:
- The sofa table that provided an area of decor at the bottom of the stairs was moved to the attic for temporary storage, until we need it in the future.
- Moved the bookshelf to the bottom of the stairs.
- Took down the pictures until I could find new places for them.
- Replaced the curtains with some cotton curtains that had been in the nursery before it was a nursery. (And added a random yellow ribbon that I found in my craft supplies.)
- Decided on a decor style and started working.

I purchased this inexpensive piece of artwork at Big Lots for $12 and used it as my inspiration for the room:

I also had a metal dragonfly that I wanted to use in the room. It was a gift from my sister-in-law. I found pond wall decals and created this art on one of the walls:

I also added alphabet wall decals, which will be displayed in later photos. The decor did not feel complete, so I added a painting that I created at a Painting with a Twist session (and then fixed up on my own at home because I did not like the paint colors that they offered to me!).

I wanted to give it a fun, whimsical feel -- enter the red paper lanterns. The final touch was the bird art. I found a package of paper bird that were $5.99 for 36 birds, less a 30% off coupon. I pulled out some white square frames that I had purchased at the AC Moore going out of business sale and some scrapbook paper, and this is what I came up with:

The other thing that I had to do was sew a cover onto the foam mat that I purchased. Apparently, cats think that foam mats for babies make excellent scratch toys! (Ugh.) I happened to have some leftover fleece material that worked well, so I made a double sided cover with velcro attachments at one end.

Ok, so the space is not 100% complete in this next pic, but I wanted to at least show an "almost done" pic so that I can publish this post. (It's been sitting in my drafts for two weeks. It's amazing how time gets away from me!)

Anyway, here's a pic from the angle of the staircase, for now. I will update with a pic from the view of the front door. I've moved around a couple of the pictures, so it's slightly different. But you can get the idea! (Oh yeah, and there's Brennon playing in his new space, too.)

Long time since my last post...

It has been nearly 9 months since my last post. The first barrier to posting was the holidays. Second, was Brennon's birth on January 16, 2014. Then the first few months adjusting with a newborn and returning to work. By the time I was ready to hop back on, I couldn't log in to my blogger account for some reason. That seems to have resolved itself. (Maybe I just didn't try hard enough the first time around?) But anyway, here I am. Since I have started to get back into my projects, I decided that I would need a place to talk about them again! And other random things too, of course.

But first, before I dive back in to the project and chatty side of things, I figured I would display some pics of my little guy.

Nursery Name Art and Receiving Blankets

The one good thing about being out of work and on modified bed rest is that I am (sometimes) able to work on a lot of projects. I'm doing pretty well this week, I have to say.

Here the letters for the name art that will go in the nursery:

Each of the fabrics that are used as the backgrounds are in the quilt that my mother is making. I am not quite sure how I will display it yet, but I'm thinking that it will somehow involve this ribbon:

I also finally finished the warm & cozy receiving blankets. I made two sets of 3 blankets, one for me and one for my draw for the Gift Exchange. So if she happens to check out my blog, she'll be able to figure out who I am pretty easily. :)

I used special stitching for the edges. And obviously, they are reversible. I kind of wish that I had bought enough material to make them a little bit bigger, but they are still darn cute.

And good news, finally! I passed my 3 hour glucose test with flying colors.

Infinity Scarf/Nursing Covers

Today is short and sweet. I made a couple of infinity scarf nursing covers. I haven't been able to do as much as I wanted because of my *ahem* two hospital admissions within one week. (Eff that noise, by the way.)

Anyway, these are extremely simple. 60" wide jersey material, cut into 2/3 or 3/4 of a yard, and sew the short ends together. The ends of the jersey material don't fray and don't need to be hemmed because they just curl on their own.

From now on, I'm going to make sure to get material that doesn't have an obvious back. It's a pain to try to hide the back. Not a huge deal, but it would be better if I didn't have to worry about it.

32 Weeks

It's been a while since I did one of these. Since my doctor told me on Monday that she thinks this baby is coming early and our goal is to make it to December 20th, I decided I wanted to document at least a little bit more. So here's one for 32 weeks, with some pics between now and the last update at 21 weeks...

 How far along? 32 weeks

How big is baby? Squash

Total weight gain/loss: Somewhere between 16 and 20 lbs. This morning I weighed 155, which would put me at 16 over. But tomorrow I'll probably weigh 159. It's so weird.

Maternity clothes? Pretty much exclusively.

Stretch marks? No, but it looks like I might get a little one right over my belly button.

Sleep? I got up to pee 7 times last night. So it's ok, just very interrupted.

Pregnancy dreams? A few.

Best moment this week? Ummm... only taking 3 Percocet yesterday (down from my normal 6)?

Miss anything? I miss functioning like a normal person, even a normal pregnant person.

Movement? All of the time.

Food cravings? Nothing really.

Anything making you queasy or sick? Nothing in particular.

Team Blue!

Labor signs: Lots of contractions every single day and occasional menstrual like cramps over my entire belly, but no dilation or effacement yet. So far so good.

Symptoms: Peeing all night and leg cramps in the middle of the night. I'm waddling and all of that, but I think that's partly due to the pain from the surgery.

Belly button in or out? The bottom part has popped out a little bit, but the top part is still in.

Wedding rings on or off? On

Happy or moody most of the time? Just plugging through.

Any milestones this week? I don't think so. Just trying to get in two more weeks so that I can deliver at Highland rather than Strong. Oh wait, I didn't go to the hospital this week. That's a milestone for me!

Looking forward to: Finishing the nursery.

Here are some pics since the last time I posted a ticker change...

Update & More Crafts

I haven't posted in the past week or so because it has taken me this long to feel well enough to do anything productive, really. After I had surgery last Tuesday (11/19) to place a stent in my ureter, I was in a lot of pain and very sick. I ended up back in the OB triage on Friday (11/22) and found out that I have an infection. Now, 8 days after surgery, I am FINALLY starting to feel like myself again.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to go back to teaching at the dance studio until after the baby is born. I am just having too many contractions to make it safe. My doctor says our goal is to make it to December 20th. Fingers crossed!

So anyway, I've finished 2 more neck warmers:

Cozy Cream
(this one will probably be a Christmas gift)

Mountain River
(this one will either be a gift or go into my etsy store)

Looking at these pictures compared to some of my earlier ones, you can really see how tired I am. And I even put on makeup to try to hide it!

I also worked on some nursery projects. I'll probably be in a good place to put up pictures of the whole nursery next week (as long as my mom gets her projects done), but here's the tree my sister and I put up yesterday. My husband hung the shelves for me. When I was telling him where to put them, I could tell that he was kind of skeptical. But after he was done, he said "wow, that actually looks really nice."

Burp cloths & more neck warmers

Well, I finished up a few more projects. I'm not sure how much I'll be able to do after tonight because I have an OB appt and surgery tomorrow. (Hooray, the end to my pain is in sight! 24 hours to go...)

I have a lot of leftover fabric from the quilt, crib skirt, and valances that are being made, so I decided to make use of it. I have finished a set of 10 burp cloths for my sister-in-law. I am going to make 3 sets of 3 to either give as gifts or to sell on Etsy. I'll only sell them if they turn out better than the ones I made for my sister-in-law. I am going to have to tweak my method a little bit.

I can't really estimate the cost since the fabric was purchased for a different project. But I guess since I would have purchased that fabric anyway, I can disclude it from the cost of the burp cloths.I did buy 2 yards of minky fabric, which was $18.71. By the time I'm done, I'll have made 28 burp cloths, so that makes the cost of each one $.67. Not too made, but they are a little bit more time consuming that I thought they would be. Using the two different fabrics is a bit trickier than I imagined it would be.

Here is the set I made for my sister-in-law:

And, of course, 2 more neck warmers. The first one is one that I'm giving to my sister (instead of the Cobalt one from a few days ago). I think she'll like this one better. I'm calling it Electric Avenue Blue:

The second one is for my mother, and I'm calling it October Sky, because it reminds me of looking up through the trees on a crisp October evening. There are blues, oranges, browns deep reds, and purples, mixed in with an occasional pop of a buttery cream. I love the colors and buttons of this one:

I will be posting a few neck warmers on my Etsy shop tonight (BeeMusedArts). Depending on the quality of the pictures, I will also be posting some original artwork done by my sister-in-law.

The three neckwarmers that I will be selling as of right now are Oatmeal, Cobalt, and Strawberry.
